Holbox, an undiscovered Caribbean Paradise

This time we got the best recommendations from a hidden jewel in the southeast of Mexico. If you are not exactly a party animal but dream of waking up listening to the nature sounds, walking through endless virgin beaches, and moving around the town in golf carts, then this is about to become your favorite place.

Holbox (meaning black hole in the Mayan language) is a small Island 3 hours distance from Cancún International Airport. To get there, you must arrive first at Chiquilá port by ground, and here pick a twenty minutes ferry to get to your destination. But hey, believe us when we say it is worth it!

The Island has around 1841 inhabitants, the streets are made of sand, the climate is humid, and its temperature is warm even in winter with an average between 21 and 38 degrees. If you are looking to change the hot wine or tea this winter for a Margarita, this is the right place.

Let’s go to the important matter…

What about the beaches?

No matter where you walk, you will always reach the beach. But there are two incredible spots accessible by foot “Punta Mosquitos” and “Punta Cocos” on opposite sides of the Island.

“Punta Mosquitos” is a dream come true, clear blue waters and sandbanks in the middle of nowhere, you will have the feeling of walking over the sea. Kilometers of low-rise beaches and no waves are perfect for relaxing.

We recommend this side of the Island for middle-day pictures, walking next to the sea, and drinking a cold beer in your "hamaca".

But if you are a sunset lover, you should move to "Punta Cocos" in the afternoon, the sunsets on this side of the island are spectacular!

How to move around the island?

Glad you ask! In Holbox there are no cars (except for a few of the residents), you will have to travel it with three main options: golf carts, bicycles and of course, on foot.

There are different places on the island where you can rent them, including the hotels sometimes. You can always take a taxi, yellow golf cart, or a 4x4.

Cool Places

Great drinks and amazing view? Alma Bar is just the right choice! Close to “Punta Mosquitos” you will find this rooftop with one of the most spectacular views of the Island. It is a must! You can thank us later!

About places to eat close to the center of the town, you can enjoy delicious nachos and fajitas at “Viva Zapata Restaurant”, a fabulous “tikinxic” fish, and ceviche at “Las Panchas”, or the famous Island specialty lobster pizza at “Roots Pizza”.

A nice place after dinner is “The hot corner” bar, where you can enjoy live music and show off your best dance moves!

Accommodation

Holbox offers a great variety of hotels for different budgets, all with rustic constructions and minimalist style surrounded by nature. If you are thinking of going out by night, we recommend you to stay close to the center, but if you are looking for total relaxation and disconnection then choose a hotel right next to the beach. The farther you are from the center of town, the weaker the internet is, so keep this in mind according to your travel preferences.

Other activities

The Island offers alternative activities for adventurous travelers. If you visit Holbox from April to November you will be able to enjoy the Bioluminescence and dive into the ocean by night to witness a natural show, water gets illuminated by tiny blue lights!
